Spring

I can't quite believe that it's been over a month since my last blog post, how time flies! Finally the sun has started to shine and the days are getting a little longer, a sure sign that despite all the snow and rain earlier this month, Spring is on its way.

I am already thinking about what fruit and vegetables I'd like to grow in the coming months, being an amateur, and not a very patient one, I think I will not be as over-ambitious this year. I seemed to have had beginner's luck with root vegetables however, with parsnips and carrots growing quite successfully with minimal effort, and a satisfactory crop of potatoes from the few old supermarket ones I'd found already rooting in the vegetable basket(!) All of the curcubits were somewhat of a disaster, with no cucumbers, squash or melons, and a tiny crop of just two courgettes from my initial twenty seedlings! My pea plants also produced only a small crop, and just one of the 9 corn seeds produced a cob, which consequently didn't pollinate properly. Again a mass of tomato plants only gave an average crop, which I know was due to having too many plants and not enough time to spend potting them up when they grew bigger.

For now however it's still too cold to be out in the garden for too long, but not for brisk country walks which are becoming a staple part of the day and a chance to get out and enjoy the the fresh air. The wildlife seems to be getting a little fed up with the cold, we've been having daily visits from robins, squirrels and a pheasant as they come to see what treats have been put out for them today.

The pheasant in particular is very inquisitive, he comes right up to the glass and peeks in if there's been no food left out for him to see why!

It feels like time for a spring clean soon, I should get organizing my things so I can keep watch for another eBay free listing weekend, a great way to clear some space and save a little money at the same time, I just hate how long it takes to list and upload every item! Better start sorting out I suppose...!
